What you need to know about the role
This is a unique role that governs the Company’s environmental performance at its integrated iron and steelworks. Leading a team of environmental specialists, you will develop and implement the environmental management system so as to meet the Company’s compliance obligations and maintain certification to the ISO 14001 standard.
You will deliver environmental monitoring programmes to assess compliance with all regulatory authorisations in a cost-effective manner, and to interpret the findings and make the necessary interventions to ensure our continued legal compliance. You will engage directly with external stakeholders, including the Environment Agency, Local Authority and other interested parties.
You will assist in benchmarking the Company’s environmental performance against best in class in order to shape the future strategic direction of the business’ sustainability agenda. Working with manufacturing and engineering departments you will develop and implement environmental technology strategies to deliver Best Available Techniques as defined for the steel sector, and further optimise process routes to minimise our use of natural resources and prevent waste.

What we need to know about you
We are looking for someone with extensive knowledge and experience of UK and European environmental legislation; and of administering environmental management systems within a manufacturing sector, preferably metals. You will have a high level of technical competence in the areas of air, effluent and waste management; with experience of working with regulatory authorities and external stakeholders. An awareness of the Control of Major Accident Hazards Regulations would be beneficial.
You will be capable of influencing internal stakeholders at all levels taking into account their individual departmental priorities. You must have a passion for identifying and driving schemes to deliver continuous improvements for the benefit of the Company, its employees and customers.
You should be someone with experience of working within a large and complex manufacturing operation. The ability to work to highly demanding deadlines is a prerequisite along with excellent communication skills.
