SummaryJSM are working on an outstanding opportunity for an Urban Designer to be part of an exciting fee winning division within Essex County Council. Their multi-disciplinary team was created in 2012 to service the increasing demand for support from neighbouring local planning authorities. Since their inception they have progressed to develop longstanding relationships beyond the public sector and now also assist private sector clients.The successful candidate will have a significant understanding of the principals of Urban Design gained either through academia or direct experience working in a similar role. Their busy team has a growing workload that covers the full range of planning advice, including heritage, landscape, urban design and ecology. You will have at least three years' post-qualification experience, including the management of projects and a broad range of planning and development management experience. The successful candidate will ideally hold relevant qualifications to post-graduate level have approximately 1-5 years' post qualification experience working in the public and/or private sectors and be able to demonstrate experience of masterplanning and urban design at a range of scales. Excellent graphic and communication skills are essential along with being experienced users of Adobe Creative Suite, SketchUp and AutoCAD. Private sector experience is desirable but not essential. LocationChelmsfordResponsibilities*To develop and deliver high quality specialist urban design and public realm services and products, working both independently and in teams.This will include:oSpecialist development management design advice including pre-application enquiries to local Planning Authorities and a range of customers and clients;oFacilitation, training, community and stakeholder consultation and engagement;oApplying urban design and public realm expertise to a range of multi-disciplinary projects, for a wide range of internal and external clients;oProduce comprehensive urban design/public realm proposals, assessment and analysis;oNegotiate enhanced development outcomes with consultants, developers and landowners;oMasterplanning, design guides and codes, development briefs, frameworks, coding and site disposal;*Working alongside the Historic and Built Environment Team Manager, the Principle Urban Design consultant, Account Managers, to ensure effective contract and account management to time, budget and specification*To discuss and develop urban design proposals with clients, applicants and/or their agents, providing concise and timely advice on appropriate design options based on expert analysis and assessment, and a good understanding of legislation, policy and good practice.*Identifying and winning opportunities to deliver profitable services, and make suggestions to improve the quality of our services, actively developing commercial acumen and constantly striving to build on skills to strengthen the market position and reputation of the business.*Actively keep updated within your specialism, sharing your learning and assisting in the creation of a positive team culture.*Assist the Senior Urban Design Consultant and Historic and Built Environment Manager in promoting and managing partnerships and links with internal and external organisations to enhance co-operation and maximise funding and income opportunities, to ensure successful outcomes for all clients.*Continually looks for ways to improve your own and colleagues' performance by seeking feedback from customers, peers and managers.Candidate must be:*Educated to degree level in a related subject*Have demonstrate able CAD experience*Considerable proven experience in a similar role*Excellent problem solving, communication, negotiation and writing skills;Contact us: If you are interested in finding out more about this position or similar roles and would like a discreet non-committal chat please contact Greg Snook ( you have applied for a role and have not received a response within one working week, please assume that your application has not been successful this time around.
