Arup is an independent firm of designers, planners, engineers, consultants and technical specialists offering a broad range of professional services. Through our work, we make a positive difference in the world. We have a new opportunity for an experienced ecologist to join our Environment team in our Bristol office with the wider ecology team in the West Region which forms part of our UK network of over 35 ecologists. We have a secured workload of projects including several of the largest infrastructure schemes in the region and require an ecologist to help in the delivery of various field surveys and reporting tasks. The successful candidate will gain experience of a range of modern, innovative survey methods and techniques, including remote mammal monitoring using trail cameras, static and mobile bat recording and use of tablet technology to rapidly gather and send field data to servers.  Our West Region comprises the South West of England, Wales and Northern Ireland, with offices in Bristol, Cardiff and Belfast. The region provides the majority of the diverse range of skills which form the Arup offer; the scale of the West operation is, intentionally, larger than the market dictates with 650 staff across the three offices including over 300 staff in Bristol, enabling large and complex projects to be undertaken within and outside the region. As a result this provides you with opportunities across a range of projects both from a skills and location point of view. Role This role will be based mainly in Bristol, with travel to other offices and work locations in the West Region and beyond, as required. Your role will be to prepare, manage and execute, with limited supervision, the delivery of ecological services for internal and external clients within a wide range of projects sectors including energy, water, transport, residential and mixed use schemes. You will also be expected to provide support to the wider environmental management and EIA team on individual projects. Good team working and communication skills will be essential, as the role will demand collaborative working with other ecologists and scientists to deliver a challenging programme of work. Tasks will include a range of habitat, vegetation and species surveys, technical reporting, provision of ecological design advice, site supervision and liaison with clients and colleagues within Arup.  Essential Skills and Knowledge Extensive experience in a range of ecological surveys – including habitat surveys and protected species surveys for birds, mammals and herpetofauna. Proven success of working in a team environment. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Ability to work under pressure to meet deadlines. Ability to work on multiple projects. Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office range of software including GIS and tablet technology. Full driving licence. Qualifications: Bachelor Degree in Ecology or a related subject. Should ideally have membership of CIEEM and ideally experience of a consultancy environment. Desirable skills and knowledge: Ability to undertake ornithology surveys independently would be advantageous, especially breeding bird surveys. Experience in Phase 2 vegetation survey work, notably NVC.  Protected Species survey licences (notably bats and/or great crested newts) are also desirable. Reward and Benefits: We offer a competitive salary at all levels, and one of the best benefits package in our sector. Core benefits include cover under the UK Healthcare Plan (private medical insurance), Life Assurance, Accident Insurance, and Income Protection (long term disability) cover. Core benefits are funded by us and made available to all permanent and specific term staff in order to support and safeguard your financial, physical and mental wellbeing. In addition permanent employees are eligible for the Global Profit Share scheme. Subject to scheme rules employees can receive two Profit Share payments per year, which are dependent on the firm’s financial performance. We are committed to equal opportunities.
