Arup is an independent firm of designers, planners, engineers, consultants and technical specialists offering a broad range of professional services. As a key member of an established environmental consultancy team, you will be responsible for ecological survey, analysis and occasional design work delivered from our offices in Manchester, Liverpool, Leeds, York, Sheffield, and Cumbria.   Your core professional expertise will be in ecology, ideally with a proven expertise in aquatic ecology. You will build on our existing aquatic workload and, where necessary, support the wider ecology team based in Leeds and elsewhere in UK with a range of habitat and protected species surveys. You will need to be able to prepare, manage and execute surveys to a high standard while working independently or as part of a team of ecologists.  You will need to have proven skills in presenting survey results and be able to produce reports to a high standard with limited supervision. The role will require travel to our offices throughout the NW & Yorkshire, and elsewhere in UK. You will be working towards chartered environmentalist status, with membership of an appropriate professional institute. The role will report to NW& Yorkshire Environment Team Leader and Deputy Team Leader.  You will need to work closely with peers throughout the UKMEA Environmental Network, and engineering staff in other teams.   Role To develop and grow Arup’s aquatic ecology service offering; To deliver high-quality EIA programmes to agreed budgets and deadlines; To contribute to team resourcing, training, and strategic management; To identify business development opportunities; To represent Arup at internal, and occasionally external, meetings; To take a support role in the preparation of  bids and tenders; To maintain compliance with Arup Management Systems as appropriate. To identify skills gaps and advise the leadership of potential need for training in technical or professional topics. Job Requirements First degree in appropriate subject Ideally higher degree(s) in appropriate subject Experience of aquatic survey techniques (river habitats survey, macro invertebrates, fish, crayfish and molluscs) implemented on a range of development types. Experience of statistical analysis and associated tools (Rivpacs). Extensive knowledge of current legislation (Water Framework Directive) and guidelines. Proven ability to work in a team environment. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Ability to work under pressure to meet deadlines. Ability to work on multiple projects. Full driving license. Membership of CIEEM or FBA, CIWEM Working towards chartered status: Desirable Skills & Knowledge Held and/or could obtain a crayfish license. Trained to undertake electro fishing. GIS mapping/analysis skills would be advantageous. Understanding of Ecosystem Services Assessment and experience of their application.
