Our client are a sustainability consultancy combining energy, climate change, environmental and chemical risk expertise with strong IT and economics capability. Nationally and internationally recognised for their expertise in planning and overseeing complex and sensitive projects, their skills have been utilised by a wide range of clients within the public and private sectors including the European Commission, government, water companies and developers. They are now recruiting for a Principal / Senior Aquatic Ecologist to join their team in Manchester. You will be involved in providing technical support on a variety of water management and ecology projects, across a wide range of clients in the water, developer and public sectors. You will be expected to lead and manage some of your own projects as well as contribute as part of a wider team. Key responsibilities: -Provide high level advice and technical input into aquatic ecology investigations. -Undertake, produce and technically review environmental assessments of various activities on aquatic ecology features. -To work effectively with water companies, developers, design engineers, contractors, planners and other regulators to help achieve positive outcomes for scheme development. -Lead a range of bids, including large and complex proposals, including development of bid storyboard, methodology and presentation at interview.  -Lead, project manage and coordinate a wide range of studies. -Develop follow-on work and new opportunities as they arise from existing work. -Build and maintain relationships with customers through project and bidding activities. Develop solutions to customer problems. -Manage the technical work of more junior staff and sub-consultants, guided and supported by our technical leads.  -Mentor more junior colleagues in all aspects of consultancy and liaise with others up to Director Level. Key skills & qualifications -Comprehensive understanding of aquatic ecology features, including fisheries, macrophytes and macroinvertebrates, with particular focus on the freshwater environment. -A sound understanding of habitat/ ecosystem physical environment pressures and ecological receptors requirements. -Experience of taking the lead technically on complex aquatic ecology assessments such as used in Sustainability Reductions investigations; Water Framework Directive heavily modified waterbody mitigation assessments; appropriate assessments for HRA; significant infrastructure EIA, Flood Defence Consent and Marine Licensing -Experience of specifying, planning and conducting field surveys, including fisheries, macrophytes and macroinvertebrates with particular focus on the freshwater environment. -Experience of providing mitigation recommendations -Experience of stakeholder communications and management -A degree in a relevant subject, such as Physical Sciences, Ecology or Biology and ideally a postgraduate degree -Full membership of CIWEM or similar professional body -Experience in the preparation of proposals and tenders -Experience of water resource management and drought planning would also be an advantage. -Excellent report writing skills, including survey reports, Environmental Statement / Assessment chapters, bid-writing skills In return our client offer a competitive salary and an attractive benefits package.
